With the advent of digitalization and social media, the photography world has seen a great deal of change onward from the 2000’s. Techniques and methodologies continue to diversify while new talent rises into the scene at an unprecedented rate. In the midst of this, we have seen the rise of the photobook together with endeavors to revisit the world of Japanese photography. The rise of Daisuke Yokota’s career almost appears a reaction to this new movement in contemporary photography – a member of Japan’s new generation of photographers, Yokota has risen to prominence in the blink of an eye. Utilizing methods that seek to unify the analog with the digital, Yokota ceaselessly releases his works as vast photobooks; and at exhibitions, the photographs contained within seem to metamorphose from their two-dimensional state into grand installations and leave their mark in history. In observing his work, one notices that Yokota’s style embodies his own pursuit into understanding the fundamentals of photography. And here, the question is, what’s next? His photographs seem to amplify – expand – ad finitum, and we can’t wait to see where it takes us.

Latest Work: Room / North
This is Yokota’s latest work entitled Room / North – a yet-to-be-released series commissioned specially for this issue of IMA. This work of ambition combines scenes from two different locales – Tokyo’s love hotels, of which Yokota is a regular visitor, together with scenes of Takinoue, a town in Hokkaido, Japan. Through his photographs, Yokota poses these two places – together with the flow of time contained within, into one setting. What rises from union of the two is an entirely different, invisible, dimension of time.

Selected Works
This endeavor introduces six different series composing the nucleus of Yokota’s body of work – including his break-out piece Back Yard (2011) and his more recent work, Matter (2014~). One signature of Yokota’s photography is how he repeatedly uses images multiple times in different series – he takes a photograph, retouches it, reimagines it, and reapplies it. This collection reflects on Yokota’s career over time, as well as offers a glance to the transition of his thought process throughout the years.

Layers of Experiments
This collection takes a deeper look at Yokota’s vast photobooks and his endeavors to pioneer new forms of photographic expression – with emphasis on the various methods of experimentation he employs and the results he achieves from such processes. In doing so, viewers revisit Yokota’s career: from his start, his transitional phase, and leading up to the present. IMA mixes his photographs with interviews with various figures, delving into reflection on his process.

R.I.P Issei Suda
One of the leading innovators in the Japanese photography world, Issei Suda passed away in 2019. Suda was a veritable figure, known for his lifelong commitment to photography and his impact on younger generations of photographers. This section centers on those close to Suda as they delve in reflection on his life, together with a collection of Suda’s work taken in the 1970’s spanning over 16 pages – never before released to the public.
