Humans beings are creatures that perceive, recognize, interact with, and consider the exterior world of things and others. These actions, carried out within cultural and historical contexts, constitute signs and establish a language. Various bodies have spoken historically in dance, fashion, and portrait photography.

Careful attention to recent photographic media reveals that physical presence has intensified and its semiotic meanings have been transformed. The development of AI and complications of and diversification of gender and national identities, as well as the necessity of addressing these issues have simultaneously raised questions regarding the criteria for beauty and other notions created in modern civilization, have helped change the way the sign of “the body” means. In this issue, we analyze what photographers today articulate when they aim to capture bodily expressions in a single image.

Influenced by Surrealism, their activities are currently gaining critical attention in the West. A reconsideration of the trajectories of these regional collectives allows us to make new discoveries and draw multiple connections to the current period.
