世界最大規模のフォトフェスティバル、アルル国際写真フェスティバル2018が、7月2日（月）から9月23日（日）まで行われる。毎年この時期になると南フランス、アルルには国内外から多くの写真家と観光客が集まる。第49回となる今年、フランス文化・通信省のフランソワ・ニッサンは「写真なしのアルルは、もはやアルルではない」と宣言した。
2018年のテーマは「Back To The Future」。
グループ展「Run Comrade, The Old World is Behind You」は、いまから50年前の1968年に着目。その年は、マーティン・ルーサー・キングとジョン・F・ケネディ大統領が立て続けに暗殺されたほか、世界各地で人種暴動やデモが勃発した動乱の年である。警察署のアーカイブから集められた反体制デモの未公開写真など貴重な写真の数々が当時の社会情勢と反抗の精神を映し出す。

一方、グループ展「Augmented Humanity」では若手作家が現在、そして未来を見つめる。すべてのデータが収集され、AIがヒトの能力を日々超越しているいま、私たちはポストヒューマン時代に突入しようとしているのかもしれない。1968年から50年後の現在私たちは新たな問題とともに、どこへ向かおうとしているのか。

そして「America Great Again」展には、フランスのレイモン・ドゥパルドン、スイスのロバート・フランク、イギリスのポール・グラハムを含む写真界のビッグネームたちが参加。出身国も世代も異なる彼らが、それぞれ独自の視点でアメリカ社会を描く。

7月2日（月）から8日（日）まで開催するOpening Weekでは、Luma Rencontres Dummy Book AwardとCurrent Publishing Trends の受賞者が発表されるほか、ワークショップやポートフォリオレビュー、フェアの出展作家によるトークイベントや展示場ツアーも行われる予定だ。
