米国の偉大な写真家アンセル・アダムスとオーナー佐多保彦との邂逅を期として、1979年に写真専門の商業ギャラリーの先駆けとして東京・虎ノ門に「フォト・ギャラリー・インターナショナル」を開廊。1995年に芝浦にサテライトの「P.G.I.芝浦」をオープン、2000年に芝浦へ統合。2015年に現在の東麻布へ移転しギャラリー名を「PGI」に変更しました。
オープン以来、アンセル・アダムス、エドワード・ウェストンなど西海岸の写真家をはじめ、ハリー・キャラハンやロバート・アダムス、ヨセフ・スデック、エメット・ゴーウィンなど、アメリカを中心に多くの優れた海外作家による作品を紹介してきました。
また国内作家においても、石元泰博や川田喜久治、奈良原一高、細江英公といった戦後日本を代表する巨匠や、三好耕三や今道子、伊藤義彦など気鋭の写真家の新人時代から、作家とともに歩んでまいりました。
2003年からは若手の発掘により一層力を入れ、佐藤信太郎や濱田祐史、新井卓など、新しい作家を迎えてきました。早くからAIPAD（国際フォトアートディーラー協会）の、数少ない日本からのメンバーであり、近年はAIPAD PHOTOGRAPHY SHOWへの出展を軸に、日本の優れた写真作品を海外のコレクター、美術館、大学などに紹介し届けています。
A long established gallery that has presented the works of distinguished Japanese and international photographers since its opening in 1979. Its collection includes rare, hand-printed works by an impressive line-up of photographers including Yasuhiro Ishimoto, Kikuji Kawada and photographers from overseas. The gallery has grown together with photographers such as Kozo Miyoshi, Michiko Kon, Shintaro Sato, Takashi Arai and Yuji Hamada, among others, who mark the history of Japanese photography. PGI places emphasis on introducing Japanese photography to the world and also on finding new talent.
